Association of Communities Against Abuse

(Formerly ECCASAT)

Central Office
Phone: 742-3558
Fax: 742-3287

Our Mission

"To promote healthy, well functioning individuals and families by addressing the trauma of emotional, physical or sexual abuse through prevention strategies and treatment."

Our Policy

To make available to all, regardless of age, race, religion, creed, sex or sexual orientation, the services of professional therapists trained in the fields of abuse.

Our Program

Education: We make available to schools, service clubs, community groups and corporations, our Education & Community Development Co-ordinator for presentations and discussions regarding the devastation and long term effects of abuse.

Prevention: Help is only a phone call away. Early intervention by a trained third party will reduce the extent of abuse within the family unit. As an integral part of the educational process, we provide literature and consultation on all forms of abuse.

Treatment: Contracted, professionally trained therapists work throughout the Central Alberta region, to provide the long term assistance that is needed by all victims of abuse.

ALL ABOUT ACAA

Who can use ACAA's service?

ACAA provides therapy for those who are victims of abuse, for their family members and for perpetrators of abuse. Perpetrators, in order for any therapy to be effective, must have either admitted to committing abuse or have been charged with the offence before they can be admitted into our program.

What services are provided?

ACAA therapists are highly trained and have expertise in a number of treatment areas including physical, sexual and emotional abuse, children of divorce, post traumatic stress and dissociative conditions, depression, family and marriage dificulties, addictions and critical incidents intervention. ACAA program services include education, training, individual, couple, family, group and play therapy.

How do people access ACAA's programs?

Individuals may call our central office at 742-3558 for information regarding our educational, preventative and treatment programs. As well as personal requests, clients may be referred to us by other agencies or through the efforts of other counsellors. Requests for therapy are referred to our intake worker who will respond to all inquiries.

Is there a charge for treatment?

In the case of children who have been referred by Child Welfare, Alberta Family & Social Services may provide the funds for therapy. Other family members may also qualify for this assistance. ACAA strives to obtain funding from numerous sources as it is our goal to have funds available to help offset the cost of therapy, whenever possible.

How does ACAA get funding?

ACAA's funding comes from numerous sources: Federal Government (Health Canada), Provincial Government (Mental Health, Alberta Family & Social Services), community agencies, service groups, corporate sponsors, private donors as well as our own fund raising efforts.

How did ACAA start?

In the late 1980's, a group of people from East Central Alberta began talking about the significant number of child sexual abuse cases they were seeing and the lack of services available to these victims. This "talking" led to the formation of a community based board representing all of East Central Alberta. A great deal of research was undertaken to determine the real needs of the area, then professional therapists were trained to provide the appropriate treatment. The program has been in operation since January of 1992 and now services the entire Central Alberta area.
