Recycling | Sanitary Landfill | Waste Collection

Landfill Life Span & Stats

At a total area of 41.1 hectares (101.5 acres) of workable space, the Sanitary Landfill was originally expected to have a life span of 50 years (as of its opening in 1983). This estimate was based on an expected waste generation of 900 kg per person per year. Recent increases in recycling programs and environmental awareness, have resulted in an observed rate of waste generation at just over 760 kg per person per year. With this decrease in waste generation and the progress in modern landfill design techniques, the Sanitary Landfill is expected to have a life span of 40 years from today's date.

All wastes that are disposed into the Sanitary Landfill are weighed and categorized by the scale house attendant. These weights are recorded and summarized for presentation in reports. The following table presents the waste quantities accepted at the landfill facility for 2006 (in kilograms of waste).

*** There are certain restrictions on what compost and yard waste is accepted.  Contact current landfill operator for more information.  Click here to link to Camrose's Composting web page.
+ Petroleum contaminated soil accepted only.  This soil is treated on site to current Alberta Environment standards and is then used as material used to cover the daily landfill wastes.
++ Asbestos will only be allowed to the landfill if certain conditions are met.  For safety reasons, any waste containing asbestos must be triple-bagged in yellow bags prior to arrival at the landfill.  The yellow bags warn landfill staff of the safety hazard of asbestos.
