What projects require a building permit?
Building permits are required for:
The construction, addition, alteration, demolition, or reconstruction after fire etc. of any building.
Any change in occupancy of a building or space within a building (for example a change from a retail building or space to a food establishment or an office).
The relocation of any building

When is a building permit not required?
Building permits are not required for:
Accessory buildings with an area less than 10 square metres (100 square feet)
Painting, decorating, re-roofing, siding, or minor repairs using similar materials for maintenance that do not affect any electrical or mechanical work work
Other permits may be required:

The floor and roof layouts for engineered floor and roof systems (usually from your material supplier).
Additional information if you are using specialized or unusual methods or materials (insulated concrete forms, preserved wood etc.)

Why do I need a building permit?
You need a permit because it:
Provides third party verification that the work has been done safely
Establishes who has done the work and where
Fulfills legislative (law) and insurance requirements

Where can I get a building permit?
Permits may be obtained at the City of Camrose office. You can also download an application online and then mail, fax, or email it to the city.

I am moving into a new commercial space. Does this require a permit?
Even if no construction occurs, a permit may be required if the move involves a change in occupancy. Different types of businesses or occupancies have different requirements.

How much notice do I need to give before an inspection?
You should give two days notice unless extenuating circumstances prevent such notice.

When do I need a demolition permit?
A permit is required for demolition of any building on your property. This is to ensure safety as well as have the structure removed from your property assessment.
When you apply for a permit you must notify

Note: Allow up to two weeks for all approvals.
18.
Do I need a building permit to develop my basement?
Yes. A building permit is required. You must provide a floor plan showing the function of all rooms and spaces and the size of all windows and doors. Additional permits for electrical, gas, and plumbing may be required.

How big does a bedroom window have to be?
The clear opening of the window must be a minimum of .35 sq. m. (3.8 sq. ft.) with no dimension less than 380 mm (15 inches).
The clear opening for a bedroom window must be measured with the window in the open position. The window must be able to stay open without any additional support.
20.
Do I need a permit to put in a wood burning fireplace, stove or pellet stove?
Yes. Solid fuel burning appliances are covered under the Alberta Building Code. There are requirements for clearances, provision of combustion air as well as carbon monoxide alarms.
21.
How long does it take to get a building permit?
Permits may take two to three weeks depending on the complexity of the project.

How much does a building permit cost?

Why is travel charged to rural properties?
Travel is charged for fair cost recovery, for user pay, and because it accurately relates to the service offered.

What is a Safety Codes fee?
A provincial levy is assessed on every permit to pay for the administration of the system by the
Safety Codes Council
. This translates to 4% of the permit fee or $4.50, whichever is greater, to a maximum of $560 per permit.
25.
When does a building permit expire?
A building permit will expire after six months if no work has been started, or if work stops for a period of six months.
