How Long Does It Take?
The length of time it takes for organic materials to compost varies. If your organic wastes are cut into small pieces the process will be faster. By turning the compost to allow air into the pile, and by keeping the pile moist, you can also speed up the process. Some compost will be finished in two months, but some may take two years or more to be complete.
How Do I Get Started?
You may use a bin, or just put the compost in a pile. A good size is 1 meter by 1 meter.
(Keep in mind that very small piles may not heat properly.)
Make a layer of leaves or other brown organic material. Then add a layer of green plant material. Dig kitchen wastes into the pile as they become available.
Thin layers of soil can also be added if needed. Keep adding to the pile, and keep the pile moist and turn it frequently to add air.
