What is Composting?
Composting is a natural process that breaks down organic materials like
kitchen, lawn, and garden wastes into soil-like material. This can save the municipality money because they do not have to pay for collecting, transporting and land filling
compostable materials. They also save money on the cost of finding and developing new landfill sites.
What Can I Compost?
Yard waste such as grass clippings, and fallen leaves, can be composted.
You can also compost kitchen scraps from fruits and vegetables, eggshells, and coffee grounds.
Food items such as meat, or fatty foods, should not be composted because they may attract
pests or cause odor problems. What to Do With Finished Compost?
When compost is ready to use, it should be dark, moist, and crumbly.
Most of the organic material will have decomposed. Now it is ready to use.Spread a layer of compost and dig it into the garden well before planting.
A thin layer of compost can also be spread on your lawn.
For houseplants, mix finished compost with soil to make rich potting soil.
You can make compost tea. Mix one part compost and one part water. Stir the mixture and then let it sit for a few hours. The compost tea can be used to water your flowers or vegetables.
